All Rounder Socks by Graphene-X

While we use socks most of our days, it just seems that we don't give them the  importance they deserve. At Graphene-X we set ourselves on a mission to develop not only the most durable but also the most versatile socks out there. Multi-purpose socks built to withstand the pass of time and adventures.

For this, first we needed to understand what was available on the market.

In terms of "highly durable" socks:
The rule of thumb says that a high quality pair of socks should have a lifespan of approximately one year. We wanted to 2X or 3X as a minimum on this. Back to the market alternatives we could find the following:

  • Materiality / Merino wool socks: durable and resistant to wear and tear, as well as odor-resistant and moisture-wicking.
  • Materiality / Synthetic blend socks: made from a combination of synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester and natural fibers like cotton or wool are also durable and resistant to wear and tear.
  • Activity / Hiking and outdoor socks: made from durable materials, reinforced heel and toe areas are designed to withstand heavy use and outdoor conditions.
  • Activity / Work socks: made from durable material such as nylon, Kevlar and reinforced heel and toe areas are designed to withstand heavy use and outdoor conditions.

On top of this, the durability of a sock also depends on the quality of the material, the manufacturing process and the care taken when washing and wearing them.

Then, our research took us to versatility: A truly versatile sock should have a combination of properties that make it suitable for a variety of activities and situations. Some of the key properties that make a sock versatile are:

  • Comfort: A versatile sock should be comfortable to wear, with a good fit and no rough edges or seams that might cause irritation.

  • Moisture-wicking: A versatile sock should be able to wick moisture away from the skin, to keep the feet dry and comfortable during activities that cause sweating.

  • Breathability: A versatile sock should allow air to circulate around the foot, to keep the feet cool and dry.

  • Durability: A versatile sock should be made from materials that are resistant to wear and tear, so that it can withstand the demands of different activities.

  • Temperature regulation: A versatile sock should be able to regulate the temperature of the feet, keeping them cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.

  • Anti-bacterial properties: A versatile sock should have anti-bacterial properties, which can help to reduce the growth of bacteria and odors on the socks.

  • Cushioning: A versatile sock should have cushioning in areas that need extra support and protection, such as the heel and the ball of the foot.

  • Flexibility: A versatile sock should have a good stretch to it, to allow for maximum movement and comfort.

  • Style: A versatile sock should have a style that can be worn with different types of shoes and clothing, suitable for both casual and formal occasions. Hallelujah for black!

  • Care: A versatile sock should be easy to care for, machine washable, and should not shrink or lose shape after washing

Next, we worked on how integrating graphene onto the fibers of a sock could improve the points mentioned above.

For those new to graphene, this is a material made up of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice pattern. It has a number of unique properties that make it a promising material for use in textiles, including high strength, durability, and thermal and electrical conductivity.

When graphene is integrated into the fibers of a sock fabric, it can improve the performance of the socks in a number of ways:

  • Durability: Graphene is an extremely strong and durable material, so when it is integrated into the fibers of a sock fabric, it can help the socks to withstand wear and tear better. This makes the socks last longer and reduces the need for frequent replacement. HUGE CHECK for us!

  • Moisture-wicking: Graphene has excellent thermal conductivity, which can help to wick moisture away from the skin and keep the feet dry. This is especially beneficial for people who are active or who have a tendency to sweat heavily.

  • Anti-bacterial: Graphene has been shown to have anti-bacterial properties, which can help to reduce the growth of bacteria and odors on the socks.

  • Thermoregulation: Graphene's thermal conductivity allows the socks to dissipate heat, which can help to keep the feet cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.

  • Electrically conductive: Graphene is an excellent conductor of electricity, and when integrated into the fibers of a sock, it can help to dissipate static electricity, this makes them useful for people working in environments where static electricity is a concern.

With all these, we couldn't wait to move forward and developed over 20 different prototypes (even launched a first version of the All Rounder Socks which was not good enough for our standards and completely redesign them).

The result: The All Rounder Socks.
A pair of socks made to perform from the office to hardcore adventures. A minimalistic design tough enough to endure the harshest environments while feeling light and smooth. First we launched them in crew and after hundreds of requests we decided to launch a second version in short cut.
